Prolific shoplifter sentenced for nearly forty offences

A prolific Tauranga shoplifter has been sentenced to two years behind bars after being convicted of nearly forty offences. Police say the investigation started with a single complaint through a retail crime data base, with no confirmed identity and no leads. But an officer was able to build-up a picture of the 45 year old woman who was pinching stuff on an almost daily basis. The conviction follows a controversial directive that set financial benchmarks for investigating petrol drive offs, retail crime and scams. It was quickly canned and since then a review been launched of cases that may have been parked up as a result of the directive. Police Commissioner Richard Chambers spoke to Lisa Owen.

A women's health advocate wants to the government to fully fund menopause consultations. It follows a Checkpoint story about an Auckland woman who was told a GP menopause consultation to discuss hormone replacement therapy would cost her $300 or she'd need to book four consecutive standard appointments. She couldn't afford either. Checkpoint also found several medical centres around the country charging several hundred dollars for an initial menopause consultation and more than $100 for a follow-up. Founder and director of Te Tatai Hauora o Hine - the National Centre for Women's Health Research Aotearoa, Professor Bev Lawton spoke to Lisa Owen.

More than half of New Zealanders a social media ban for under 16 year olds, according to the latest RNZ Reid-Research poll. It comes as the government looks into options to restrict social media for young people, after a National Party Bill was dismissed by the ACT party as unworkable. Roaming dog attacks in Auckland could mean sight impaired people living in the southern suburbs could miss out on a guide dog after a savage attack on a handler and his guide dog. Blind low vision New Zealand said there's been several incidents, including a roaming dog attack last year that saw one of its clients having to go hospital and the guide dog having to be relocated out of Auckland. It's now relucant to place guide dogs in South Auckland. Pete Hoskin, head of Guide dogs for Blind Low Vision spoke to Lisa Owen.

Sustainable burial options for a greener goodbye

Many of us feel the pressure to be more eco-friendly and sustainable in the way we live, but what about when we or our loved ones die? Six million kilos of Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere every year from cremations in New Zealand, while for every burial about 40 kilograms is emitted. But as well as carbon emissions, there is also the issue with space, as many cemeteries and urupa are running out of room or at capacity. Louise Ternouth took a look at what more sustainable burial options are available.

Animal de-sexing a priority in wards rife with roaming dogs

One Auckland councillor said there's so many roaming dogs in his ward there are streets he doesn't feel safe walking on, and some areas are no go zones. Last year there was a 17 percent increase in dog attacks in the city, with 2846 investigated. Between September and December last year 89 of those attacks were on children. Today the council anounced a t pilot programme with the SPCA and 17 vet clinics where owners will get vouchers to have their animals de-sexed for free. West and South Auckland are priority areas for the scheme. Manurewa-Papakura Ward Councillor Daniel Newman spoke to Lisa Owen.

"Start procreating or start panicking." That's the core message of a once-fringe ideology now pushing its way into the mainstream called pronatalism. Elon Musk is one of the movement's loudest voices, boasting 14 kids and calling population decline humanity's biggest threat. The pronatalist movement is largely led by white conservatives and tech elites. Critics say it's not just about babies it's about power, and control. Dr. Karen Guzzo is a sociologist, fertility expert and the director of the Carolina Population Center. She argues that solving the "birth rate crisis" isn't about pushing people to have more kids, it's about building a society where they actually can.

Our Changing World: Tūī translocation

Today on Our Changing World – we have a piece from the archives – from 15 years ago. Chatham Island tūī once were common on the main Chatham Island, but from the 1930s their numbers started to decline, and by the 1990s they were all but gone. In 2009 fourteen tūī were transferred from nearby predator free Rangatira island to the main island. They all survived the winter, and some started to breed. Following up on this success, local conservation group the Chatham Island Taiko Trust decided to translocate more in 2010. We Alison Ballance and the tūī team just after they’ve caught and contained 40 birds.

A new book from co-authors Simon Pollard and Phil Sirvid - Incredible Insects of Aotearoa from Te Papa Press - is brimming with their favourite insects and has been written to inspire the little entomologists of the future. Book co-author Simon Pollard speaks to Jesse from our Christchurch studio.
